About me

I am a retired teacher. I spent my career living and working in North London. I always had an interest in art, but this was overshadowed by my commitment to my working life. I promised myself that when I stopped working, I would make beautiful pictures. When I retired, I decided to return to my childhood area of South Wales. I now live in Caerphilly and enjoy fulfilling my dream. I am fortunate to have a loft room that I have converted into my studio. This gives me the luxury of maintaining a workspace for my paintings.

I have focused on rediscovering the beautiful Welsh countryside. Initially I focused on mountains and coastal scenes. I then became interested in nature taking over the industrial past. During the Covid pandemic, I used my time to rediscover scenes of the Brecon beacons and the south Wales coast. I placed small figures in each one, imagining myself visiting these beautiful areas again. I called these my isolation paintings.

I have sold some of my pieces since I retired and was thrilled to have exhibited in the Summer Exhibition 2018 and 2023. During 2023 I was also in the Welsh contemporary exhibition at Milford Haven. I also joined 50 other artists on the set of Landscape artist of the year at Hever Castle.

I continue to enjoy exploring the art of the Welsh landscape and have created two new categories – Hidden Gems and Abandoned Wales.

I take commissions but always return to the Welsh landscapes that are my inspiration. Marion Thomas
